{"id":15385,"date":"2022-08-04T11:03:11","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T11:03:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/menning.kopavogur.is\/event\/08-18-past-perfect-santiago-mostyn\/"},"modified":"2023-08-22T15:16:14","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T15:16:14","slug":"08-18-past-perfect-santiago-mostyn","status":"publish","type":"event","link":"https:\/\/menning.kopavogur.is\/en\/event\/08-18-past-perfect-santiago-mostyn\/","title":{"rendered":"08-18 (Past Perfect) | Santiago Mostyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this\u00a0newly conceived\u00a0exhibition at Ger\u00f0arsafn, Santiago Mostyn\u00a0presents a\u00a0constellation\u00a0of photographic and moving-image works created across\u00a0the Black Atlantic, focusing\u00a0on\u00a0sites of personal\u00a0significance\u00a0for the artist.\u00a0The photo series\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: normal !msorm;\"><em>08<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal !msorm;\"><em>\u201318 (Past Perfect)<\/em><\/span>,\u00a0presented here for the first time,\u00a0was created over a decade of\u00a0returns to\u00a0Trinidad,\u00a0Zimbabwe,\u00a0Grenada, the\u00a0United States, and Scandinavia.\u00a0Sections of the gallery will be hung with wallpaper treated\u00a0to\u00a0a cyanotype process, which will shift and develop a grey-blue tone\u00a0as they are exposed to the winter sun over the course of the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>In the same space, a\u00a0film\u00a0work,\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: normal !msorm;\"><em>Drawing for Bellevue Estate<\/em><\/span>, will be shown. The\u00a0film\u00a0was recorded\u00a0in Tobago, the island that\u00a0inspired the landscape of\u00a0Robinson Crusoe, and\u00a0bore\u00a0witness to\u00a0many waves\u00a0of European\u00a0colonial\u00a0exploitation. In the work, we watch four\u00a0men\u00a0cut their way through the\u00a0tropical\u00a0bush, marking territory, but towards an unknown goal. Their mapping\u00a0recalls the\u00a0early ambitions\u00a0of European\u00a0colonists\u00a0to\u00a0claim and industrialize the\u00a0Caribbean, but the film\u00a0also\u00a0focuses on\u00a0the island&#8217;s largest\u00a0Silk\u00a0Cotton Tree,\u00a0revered for\u00a0the legend of Gang-Gang Sarah, a\u00a0historical figure whose attempt to\u00a0\u2018fly home\u2019 to Africa by leaping from the tree ended in her death.\u00a0The work, therefore,\u00a0becomes\u00a0a portrait of a landscape where stories of colonialism, slavery,\u00a0mythology, and personal experience meet.<\/p>\n<p>Santiago Mostyn\u2019s films, installations,\u00a0texts,\u00a0and performances\u00a0often\u00a0explore the\u00a0dissonance\u00a0of lives lived between\u00a0different\u00a0political spheres. His work simultaneously employs footage of historical events, political and cultural figures, and racial injustice to\u00a0speak to\u00a0his own personal histories. Santiago creates an intuitive narrative through layering and collage, whether through video or installation, combining new and archival imagery. His research-like process examines questions of identity and memory, both personal and collective, and the intersections of history with current events.<\/p>\n<p>Living and working\u00a0between Stockholm and Berlin,\u00a0Santiago Mostyn (b. 1981,\u00a0San Francisco) holds his BA in 2004 from Yale University. After attending St\u00e4delschule from 2006-2007, he received an MA in 2013 from the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm. Santiago was a resident at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bethanien.de\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">K\u00fcnstlerhaus Bethanien<\/a>\u00a0in 2021, and will be a fellow at Schloss Solitude in 2022.
