Ágústa Kristófersdóttir about Cultural Heritage and Visual Art

Gerðarsafn Art Museum

Welcome to a lecture on the boundaries between visual art and cultural heritage with Ágústa Kristófersdóttir on Saturday, 14 November at 14:00.

Paintings, woodcarvings, embroidery, and various forms of craft are preserved as part of the nation’s cultural heritage and are rarely shown in the context of visual art, even though these works are no less a part of the history of art in Iceland. This lecture will explore how Icelandic artists, past and present, have drawn on cultural heritage and incorporated it into their work. It will also consider whether the distinction between cultural heritage objects and visual art is always useful, and how this separation influences our understanding of Icelandic art history.

Ágústa Kristófersdóttir is Head of Collections and Research at the National Museum of Iceland. She holds degrees in History and Museum Studies from the University of Iceland. For more than twenty-five years, she has worked in the museum sector, serving at institutions devoted to both cultural heritage and visual art.
