GERÐUR permanent exhibition

Gerðarsafn Art Museum | Gerðarsafn Art Museum

1. floor

A permanent exhibition on the works of sculptor Gerður Helgadóttir (1928-1975) which Gerðarsafn is founded in honour of. The exhibition sheds light on the creativity, avant-garde and experimentalism of the artist, the complexity of the works and a wide range of materials.

Gerður Helgadóttir was a prolific artist and a pioneer in three-dimensional abstract art in Iceland. Gerður challenged accepted notions of art with her avant-garde approach to different materials, aesthetics and references that were shaped by her wide range of interests. The exhibition focuses on Gerðurʼs sculptures and sheds light on the artistʼs creativity, avant-garde and experimentalism.

The basis of the exhibition are the fifteen hundred works by Gerður in Gerðarsafn – Kópavogur Art Museum’s collection. Gerðarsafn is the only museum in Iceland founded in honour of a female artist.
