SHELLter (a play on the words shell and shelter) is a designed as a sanctuary for children and grown-ups alike to find peace and quiet in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The three spaces are inspired by tortoises, snails, shellfish and other animals who can retreat into their shell when they need to.
ÞYKJÓ (the Icelandic word for make-believe) is a world of costumes, installations, workshops and adventures for children and their families in the field of textile-, toy- and experience design. Designers with a varied background work in co-operation with education specialists, scientists and – most importantly – children.
SHELLter was developed during the ÞYKJÓ-designers’ residency in Gerður’s Studio and is in dialogue with the work of Gerður Helgadóttir. While working on and developing SHELLter, the designers collaborated with biologists at the Natural History Museum of Kópavogur. Air quality, light and acoustics are intrinsic to the design of SHELLter.
ÞYKJÓ is an interdisciplinary design team consisting of designers Sigríður Sunna Reynisdóttir, Ninna Þórarinsdóttir, Erla Ólafsdóttir and Sigurbjörg Stefánsdóttir.
