Together | Polish Art Workshop

Gerðarsafn Art Museum

Join us for a multilingual art workshop that brings cultures together through Polish paper cutting tradition!

Wycinanka, a traditional Polish folk art of paper cutting, has been practiced for centuriesmas a form of decoration. This craft involves the cutting of paper into intricate designs, often inspired by nature, geometric patterns, and scenes of everyday rural life. Utilizing scissors or knives, artists transform sheets of colored paper into beautiful, elaborate compositions, which are then used to adorn homes, churches, and social gathering places, particularly in celebration of major events and holidays.

In this workshop, participants will learn the rich history and techniques of wycinanki. They will learn the basic principles of this art form and create their own wycinanki under the guidance of the polish artists Weronika Balceak and Lukas Bury.

This workshop is open to individuals of all ages and skill levels, with no prior experience in polish or art required. You can stop by at any time during the workshop and stay as long as suits you. Children are expected to be accompanied by an adult. The workshop is in Polish, Icelandic and English.

The goal of this workshop is to promote intercultural understanding and provide a space for people from different backgrounds to come together and create something beautiful. This workshop is part of an event series, which is organized in collaboration between the Culture Houses of Kópavogur and GETA – hjálparsamtök.

Admission is free and everybody is welcome!
