Artists Áslaug Íris Katrín Friðjónsdóttir, Jóhanna Kristbjörg Sigurðardóttir, Steinunn Önnudóttir and Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson participate in this year’s edition of SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE.
SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE is an exhibition series seeks to honor sculptor Gerður Helgadóttir (1928-1975), who the museum is named by, and her contribution to Icelandic art as well as to give insight into the medium in contemporary times. This year´s exhibition, held for the third time in August showcases works by contemporary artists alongside the works of Gerður Helgadóttir.
Earlier this year Gerðarsafn sent out an open call to artist. Participants for the series this year have been selected out of over 100 artists that replied to the call. They are Áslaug Íris Katrín Friðjónsdóttir, Jóhanna Kristbjörg Sigurðardóttir, Steinunn Önnudóttir and Styrmir Örn Guðmundsson.
The title SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE refers to the exhibition Sculpture/sculpture/sculpture, held in 1994 at Kjarvalsstaðir (now Reykjavík Art Museum) with works by 27 Icelandic sculptors. The exhibition opened the same year as Gerðarsafn opened its doors to visitors.
SCULPTURE / SCULPTURE 2018 will open on Friday, August 24th at 20 p.m.
